George Caperton

George Calvin Caperton Sr., 77, of Corsicana passed away on December 31, 2008. George was born to Iva Mae Gaddy-Caperton and Ernest Calvin "Sonny" Caperton in Monticello, Arkansas on February 22, 1931 Life in Monticello for George was much akin to life in Mayberry with memories of local and colorful citizens such as Fuzz and Noel and boys of the Monticello Baptist Home and where life consisted of paper routes, working gas stations and Clay's Grocery, hanging out at the town square after dark, mules, farming, house painting, rubber drives, paper drives, and metal drives for the war effort. There was time for family and friends and good food and enough money for a Hershey Bar and a Coke at the Monticello Drug. And getting around the community by walking and bicycle, and later drives to the great Mississippi River. A good life for a young boy that later became a good and great man, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to so many, many people. If he liked you he liked you and he practicly liked everyone. George married his high school sweet heart Doris Evelyn Schooley on December 11, 1950 while in the U.S. Air Force serving as Military Police in Panama City, Florida and Port Orena, Califronia. After returning to Monticello he received his education at Monticello A&M. George and Doris moved their family of three girls at the suggestion of a boyhood friend who had preceded them to Mesquite, Texas and George Calvin (Bud) Caperton Jr. was born in 1961 in Terrell. George became Assistant Tax Collector for Mesquite. In 1965 he was offered and accepted a position as Corsicana School Tax Assessor. In the years that followed he became Chief Appraisor of Navarro County until retirement. George was a longtime member of the Lion's Club, Dad's Club at school's and also a colorful character in his own right at local and various "coffee associations" such places as Douglas's, the old What-a-Burger, various Shell Stations about town, Braum's, and lest we forget Buck Hamilton's north and south of town where they would cook and eat the most unusual things. You were impolite to ask questions. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Doris Evelyn, secon son David Foud, and brother Teet Caperton. George is survived by his children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren: Diane and Dieter Meins of Dawson, Wanda and Mike Sims of Spring, Kathy and Mackie Robinson of Streetman, and Bud and Rena Caperton of Corsicana. Grandchildren: Margaret and Brian Peters of Crowley, Sonny and Michelle Sims of Spring, Stuart Sims of Spring, Micah and Steve Clark of Groesbeck, Michael Kormos of Corsicana, Tony and Christna Kormos of Corsicana, Candice and Clint Elliott of Streetman, Sarah Sims of Spring, David Caperton of Bristol, and Walker Caperton of Corsicana. Great grandchildren: Seth, Tyler, Garrett, Gregory, Audrey, Rivers, Holden, Cody, and Kimber. He is also survived by: cousins; Marilynn, Martha Sue, and Libby of Arkansas, brothers-in-law Billy and Noel of Arkansas, and numerous neices and nephews in Arkansas, Georgia, and Tennessee. George loved and worried about his family and knew family cmae first and did his very best to care for them and yet never intervened or criticized. George loved his friends too, especially those he referred to as "painters and liars". He believed in making do with what he had and if he couldn't fix or repair it he then could manage to do without it. He had no fondness of buying new things (except for his passion for new gradgets and gizmos from Sear's). We have all learned somthing of value from George each in our so many ways. We'll miss his stories and recollections of the simple life pleasures and memories he shared with everyone. Life was good for George as it is for all his family. George Caperton will be sorely missed by everyone. We Love you Daddy. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Graveside at Oakwood Cemetery on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Bro. Bill Honea officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Mackie Robinson, Dieter Meins, Sonny Sims, Stuart Sims, David Caperton and Steve Clark. Honorary pallbearers wil be Paschall Nichols, Wilmer Hale, Dwight Farmer, Brian Peters, Clint Elliott, and Charlie Caperton.
