Gary Wayne Nelson

Gary Wayne Nelson, 66, of Corsicana, Texas, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at his ranch — the place he loved most. A lifelong resident of Navarro County, he always considered it home, from watching the sunrise to the sunset. He was born on August 24, 1959, in Corsicana to Wayne and Judy Nelson. Gary started school in Mildred while his family lived on the Stroube Ranch, where he worked alongside his father and his brother and learned the land and the trade. He later transferred to and graduated from Blooming Grove High School. Gary was a cowboy through and through, and one of the hardest workers anyone knew. His love and knowledge of cattle began at a young age and never faded, and he carried the family's farming and ranching legacy forward every single day of his life. He worked hard for everything he had, took pride in all he did, and earned the respect of all who knew him. He passed that same work ethic and love of the land down to his children and grandchildren. On April 16, 2023, Gary married Christie. Some love stories begin early; theirs began later in life, proof that God's timing is always perfect. Together they shared a home full of faith and family. He had a huge heart and cared deeply for the people around him. If anyone needed a hand hauling a load of cattle, a few bales of hay, or the use of his working facility, they knew exactly who to call. He rarely missed a ball game his kids or grandkids were playing in, and he was always there to help wherever he was needed. Above all, Gary loved the Lord. His faith in Christ took root at an early age and stayed with him through his final day. Anyone who walked into his home couldn't help but notice his Bible lying open on the coffee table in the living room. He cared deeply for his church and his church family. Gary is survived by his wife, Christie Nelson; his parents, Wayne and Judy Nelson; his son, Jeff Nelson and wife Melissa, and their children Frankie and Cade; his daughter, Joni Baker and husband Chad, and their children Paige and Peyton; and his daughter, Courtney Nelson and Jake, and their children Andi, Darby, Cooper, Coby, and Grady. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Nelson. The family finds comfort in knowing the two of them are together again. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Corsicana. A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Cowboy Heritage Church of Freestone County, 309 US Highway 84 W, Teague, Texas, with Jimmy Cotton officiating. Graveside burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cowboy Heritage Church of Freestone County.
