June Allmon

June Edda Sloan Allmon, daughter of Blanding Sloan, the artist, and granddaughter of Dr. Alexander Sloan, who built Corsicana's first hospital, died on March 14, 2009. Born to Lillian Weis Sloan and Blanding Sloan, in Chicago, on July 16, 1916, June was 92 years old when she died. June grew up in Chicago along with her older brother, Alexander Colvin Sloan, and later, her sister Mary Lillian Hofstadter. She spent summers in Corsicana at her grandmother's (Mrs. Lelia Sloan) house on 15th Street- the market Ole now sits on the property. There she eventually met her future husband, Leonard Elliston Allmon- they were married in Grandma Sloan's home. The picture above is the same picture the Corsicana Newspaper published on that occasion, in 1937. During Texas Centennial in the 30's, at Dallas' Fair Park, she participated in the pagent, which her father, Blanding directed. Her brother Colvin was the Official Centennial Photographer. Over the first years of marriage June and Leonard lived many places. During World War II when Leonard went over seas she stayed in Chicago with their 3 childern, Lelia Jean, Jon Edward, and Leonard Elliston II. The family moved back to Texas after the war and resided in Dallas, soon buying a home in Irving where the children finished school. Though she had attended the Chicago school of design, she eventually went to work for Temco, later Ling-Temco-Vought, and instead of designing clothing, assisted in designing airplanes. During her career there she helped with the engineering of the apollo missions, redesigning Gus Grissoms helmet (to accommodate his ears!), and fighter planes among other projects. She recieved metals and awards from NASA and the government for her work. The capsule and Gus' helmet are exhibited in the Smithsonia Air and Space Museum. She retired from L-T-V and moved from Irving to Corsicana and enrolled at the age of 50 in Navarro Junior College Nursing Program- for awhile after the graduated she worked at Navarro Regional Hospital. When she retired she moved to Streetman, Texas to be near her beloved mother in law, Wille Irene Jones Allmon. She was a member and elder of the First Prsbyterian church in Streetman. During that time she traveled often, visiting her children and family- driving all over the country accompanied by her siberian husky, Chien. She was very adventurous. She wrote poetry, loved music, was a talented artist, a wonderful cook, and very beautiful in face and character. For awhile when her health began to fail June rotated the years between two months stays with her children, her sister Mary, her sister in law Shirley Allmon, and her daughter in law Pam houses. Finally she went to live at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village in Corsicana in the Assisted Living section where she had wonderful care from all the staff. June is survived by her 3 children and their spouses, Lelia Jean Allmon and Thomas Neyfeldt of Streetman, Jon Edward and Ingrid Allmon of Dothan, Alabama, and Leaonard Elliston and Jean Allmon of Richardson. Her loving grandchildren all call her Nedda- they are Christopher Neyfeldt and wife Sherry of Corsicana, Lori Sloan Allmon Johnson of Dothan Alabama, Michael Sean Allmon of Enterprise Alabama, Sylvia Sibinski and Sarah Sibinski of Dothan Alabama, Stacey Lanette Allmon and Chris Simpson of Frisco, Shawna and Leonard Elliston Allmon III of Plano, Dr. Michelle Brock of Dallas, Matthew Brock of Dallas- Great grandchildren are Alexander, Christopher Thomas, Sarah Jean, Savanna, Haylie, Zachery, Grant, Eli, Davis, Gabbie , Taylor. Her dearest sister, Mary Carlson Nash of Denton, nephews James Carlson, Greg and Mary Carlson, Tom and Becky Carlson, nieces Susan Sloan, Lisa Allmon Brown, Sandy, Patty, Sharla. Her former Daughter in law and husband, Pam and Dwayne Tittle, former daughter in law Linda Allmon and J. Dee German remain also loving children. Visitation will be 6-8pm Wednesday March 18, 2009. Services will be 10am Thursday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel. Burial will follow at Birdston cemetery in Streetman. Pallbearers will be Christopher Neyfeldt, Chris Simpson, Richard Brown, Tom Carlson, Josh Carlson, Clyde Rawlins. Lucheon follows at Lakeside Methodist Church on FM 416 in Streetman.
