July 26, 1933 - January 13, 2021
On July 26, 1933, Billye Jane Peace entered the world and the arms of her parents, Lena and Will Peace of Dallas, TX. Being more mature in age, they were ecstatic upon her birth and fondly called her by her middle name. Though Jane was the only child of their marriage, she became the younger sibling to 2 half-sisters and an aunt to a beloved nephew. Jane grew up to be a lively and bright student involved in a host of school activities. She was most proud of becoming her high school’s majorette, a huge honor (something her children heard about often!). Jane attended Texas College in Tyler, TX after graduating from high school, and there she met the love of her life, Louis David Hicks. Both were very committed to each other, their studies, their respective sorority/fraternity, becoming teachers and creating a family. Billye Jane, a loving mother, was supportive, kind and never minced words. Her sense of humor was witty and quick. Those strong maternal skills and savviness for teaching made her stellar in the classroom while teaching reading and later, American History. Billye Jane was passionate and fiercely committed to the students she served through her spirited and engaging teaching style for more than 40 years. She wasn’t simply a great teacher, but a mentor and advocate for her students. At home, Billye Jane adored entertaining. One would find a host of guests surrounding her from friends from around the world to the high school football team. She was known for serving the latest and most popular food novelties and drinks. Billye Jane made life fun. It was easy to be drawn to her, to be embraced by her. Her legacy is fitting because it surpasses her immediate family. The students she educated through the years keep her spirit alive and relevant. For this, we are all grateful and better for it. Billye Jane leaves behind her children: Louis David Hicks, Jr., Byron Hicks, Elena Dawn Hicks Delwyn Hicks (Crystal). Grandchildren: Sidney Hicks Jr., and Christopher Hicks (their mother Connie) and beloved nephew, Britt Ronald Thompson (Joanne) She peacefully left this life January 13, 2021 and was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Louis David Hicks, Sr., children: Sidney Nathaniel Hicks (Connie) and Billy Hicks. A public visitation for Billye Jane Hicks will be Sunday January 24, 2021 from 1pm-7pm and family will be present from 4pm-7pm at the Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date.
