Dr. Robert Lowell Campbell MD

Dr. Robert Lowell Campbell, 87, of Corsicana, passed away October 19, 2013, at Twilight Nursing Home in Corsicana. He will be laid to rest in a private burial at Resthaven Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow on Thursday, October 24, at 11 a.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home of Corsicana, officiated by Pastor Steve Elkins of Believers’ Bible Church. He was born in the family farmhouse near Crowell, TX on November 9, 1925, to Dwight Lowell and Hattie Rader Campbell. He graduated from Crowell High School in 1943 and enrolled as a pre-med student at The University of Texas at Austin. Within a few months he volunteered for the Army Air Corps and proudly served our nation on B-17 and B-25 aircraft as radio operator and gunner, rising to the rank of Sergeant by the time of his separation from active duty in 1946. He returned to Crowell where he was married to Juanita Traweek on June 16, 1946, at the home of his parents in Crowell. Shortly thereafter they returned to Austin where he resumed his pre-med studies. He achieved his Doctor of Medicine degree from Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, and conducted his residency at City County Hospital (now John Peter Smith Hospital) in Ft. Worth, serving as chief resident from 1953 - 1954. In 1954, he entered a general medicine practice in Corsicana and was a founding member of the Physicians & Surgeons Clinic. In 1983 he volunteered again for military service as a reservist in the U.S. Air Force. He rose to the rank of Colonel, assuming command of the 11th Contingency Hospital Unit at Carswell AFB. This unit was activated and deployed to the Little Risington, U.K., during Operation Desert Storm where they received numerous citations for excellence. He retired from the reserve September 30, 1991. He was well-known in Corsicana for his medical practice from 1954 to 2002, as well as his dedication and service both within and beyond the immediate community. He conducted a medical missionary trip to Brazil in the summer of 1966. He served as the representative from the Navarro County Medical Society to the Texas Medical Association House of Delegates for 41 years. He was widely known and deeply respected within this organization for his unwavering principles and was often referred to as "the conscience of the House". He served as both President and Treasurer of the Association of American Physicians & Surgeons, a conservative national medical organization. He served as county chairman within the Republican Party. Following his retirement he enjoyed being a part of the Hospital Auxiliary and looked forward to the association with fellow volunteers and the patients. He was a passionate aviator, hunter, water skier, jogger, and walker. He is preceded in death by his parents D.L. & Hattie Campbell of Crowell, Texas, and his son Bruce Neal Campbell of Austin, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Juanita, and by sons, Dwane & wife Glenda Campbell of Houston and Dr. Dale & wife Kathy of Corsicana; daughter-in-law Gayle Campbell of Pflugerville; grandsons, Brian Campbell of Dallas and Gary Campbell of Austin; granddaughters Lori Campbell of Houston, Ellen Campbell of Dallas, Lesley Campbell of Houston, and Debbie Campbell of Houston. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. David and wife Peggy Campbell of Corsicana, and sister, Doris Campbell Binnion of Kerrville, and by numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
