Pat Wheat

Patsy Elizabeth Cummings Wheat, age 90 of Corsicana, went home to be with her Lord on the morning of April 3, 2020 surrounded by her family. Private graveside service will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove. Memorial service will be planned at a later date. Patsy was born August 28, 1929 in Gatesville to Ernest Lee and Mattie Lee Manning Cummings. She grew up and attended school in Gatesville. She attended Abilene Christian University, graduating with at teaching degree in 1949. While teaching in Coahoma, Texas she met the love of her life, G.R. Wheat. They were married in 1950 and began their family in Gatesville. Raising four children, they made Gatesville their home for 28 years. During that time Patsy taught at the State School for boys and later at Gatesville Junior High. In 1978, she and G.R. moved to Corsicana where Patsy taught at several schools in the area. Retiring after teaching for 28 years, she had many former students that have shared funny and fond memories. A few instances are: her class would adopt a child in an underprivileged country; she always had a cup of hot Dr. Pepper; and she would describe a man (her husband) who could guess the weight of a cow/bull at a distance. Some students may have bragged that they had gotten a few licks with Mrs. Wheat's paddle. Patsy enjoyed spending time with her family, especially playing board games with her grandkids and great grandkids. Her favorite game was called aggravation and she showed no mercy. Patsy loved the Lord. She taught Sunday school for many years. She was involved in evangelistic work over the years, traveling to New York and Scotland. She was also involved in bible correspondence courses with individuals in Africa; prison ministry in Gatesville and Corsicana; as well as bible studies with friends and family. She is preceded in death by her husband , G.R. Wheat; parents Ernest Lee Cummings and Mattie Lee Manning Cummings; brothers Raby Lee Cummings and Bobby Louis Cummings. Patsy is survived by her daughters, Paula Gillen and husband Paul, Nancy Wright and husband Doyce, LaClaire Diamond and husband Steve and son Gary Wheat and wife Teresa. Grandchildren, Shelby Briggs and husband Chad, Stacy Cook and husband Marvin, Steely Bray and husband Robert, Brien Wright and wife Tina, Brent Wright and wife Sophia, Garrett Wright and wife Julie, Collin Wright and wife Shannon, Micah King and husband Whit, Marley Dempsey, Chris Diamond, Dillon Diamond and wife Melissa, Brittan Diamond and wife Autumn, J.P. Gillen and wife Angela, Heath Gillen and wife Tiffany, Clay Gillen. Great grandchildren, Tatum Briggs, Reese Briggs, Gentry Briggs, Olin Wright, Tallulah Wright, Lukas Wright, Hannah Wright, Caleb Wright, Ellis Wright, baby girl Wright, Jackson king, Layne king, Ryatt Diamond, Coleson Diamond, baby Diamond, Bryson Fisher, Tyler Gillen, Jadyn Gillen, Hannah Putman, Gunner Gillen, Owen Gillen and Phoenix Gillen, Morgan Martin and family, Miller Cook and Judson Cook, Belton Armstrong and Barron Armstrong, Elli Bray, Brint Bray, Corbin Bray and Devan Bray. Sister in law Joy (Mrs. Bob) Cummings; nephews Lindsey Cummings and Eric Cummings; niece Meredith Cummings and their families; beloved family friend Sammy Mosley and family. Heartfelt thank you to Dan Gibson, Judy Smith, Willie Mae Green, Judy Angel and Dottie Martin for their loving care. Family ask that memorials be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Westhill Church of Christ Missions Fund.
