John Moore

John Sidney Moore, age 90, was born the oldest of 10 children on June 6, 1920 to Stanford and Dora Moore. He passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at his home. Sidney attended Bryan and Blooming Grove Schools, where he was a star basketball player. He was a proud World War II veteran. He enlisted in the Army on January 28, 1942 and fought in th Fighting 69th Infantry Division. He was a machine gunner in the Battle of the Bulge and received several medals, including a Bronze Star for bravery. On November 1, 1957, he showd his bravery in another way when he married the love of his life, Ruth Whitener, and acquired 3 children. Sidney was a true cowboy and only worked at that one vocation all his life. He taught his kids how to hunt, fish, tend cows and play basketball. He faithfully attended Westhill Church of Christ for approximately 53 years. In his later years he kept himself busy tooling around town in his PT Cruiser, picking up pecans, tending his garden and flowers, and collecting old coins and any old antique thing he could find. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks and Texas Rangers and watched them until his last days on the earth. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, friends and neighter to many. He is preceded in death by his parents, Stanford and Dora Moore, brother James, sister Iva, daughter Linda Mershawn, and son Don Whitener. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth Moore, son Ray Whitener and wife Nita, grandsons and granddaughters, Jon and Chris Mershawn, Chris Whitener and Jennifer Vailes, Haley Wilson, Amanda and Zack Carver, Hillary and Chris Hutto; great grandsons Mikey, William and Matt, brothers and sisters Alvin Moore, Lewis Moore and wife Barbara, Mary Johnson, Fay Steen, Margaret Jenkins and Stringer, Frances and Rufus Whitener, Molly and Kenneth Southard, and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel with Sam Dilbeck officiating. Burial will follow at Dresden Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jon Mershawn, Chris Whitener, Zack Carver, Eddie Moore, Wayne Price, Stan Jenkins, Teddy Ray Southard. Honorary pallbearers will be Tillman Farrell, Marshall Mahoney, Elwood Farrell, Jimmy Bess, Robert Bess, James Chapman, Marvin Price and his nephews.
