Jean Whitten

Norma Jean Whitten, age 82, of Purdon, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 1, 1942, in Dresden, Texas, Jean was the cherished daughter of Norman E. Brister and Lucy Melton. Jean is survived by her son, Doug Whitten, and his fiancée Di Anna and beloved daughter-in-law, Anita Whitten Welch and husband Ronnie. She will be deeply missed by her nieces: Jamye Putman and husband Jimmy, Janith McManus and husband Dale, Renda Schuelke and husband Alan, Teresa Russell, Kathy Reppart and husband Mike, and Sayla Hintz and husband Gary, as well as her numerous great-nieces and nephews. Jean’s legacy of love and warmth extends to her grandchildren: Kelsey Whitten, Ethan Whitten, and Rebecca Auld. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Lucy Brister, her beloved husband, Don Whitten, her son, Dennis Whitten, and her sisters, Peggy Russell and Faye Leach. Jean enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, from watching game shows and old westerns on television to savoring her favorite Mexican food. Her greatest joy came from her family, especially during their cherished Sunday dinners and her regular hair appointments. Jean dedicated over 30 years of her life working at Carl White, where she was affectionately known as "Mamma Jean" by everyone. Her warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Norma was also a faithful member of Navarro Mills Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dresden Cemetery Association in Jean’s memory. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, June 13th, from 6-8pm at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10am on Friday, June 14th, at Dresden Cemetery with Pastor Ben Butler officiating. Pallbearers will be Rusty Putman, Joseph Shofner, Jonathan Shofner, Jay Russell, Ethan Whitten, Brindon Dechaume, Jordan Dechaume, and Tyler McManus. Norma Jean Whitten will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
