Jean Owen

Jean Corley Owen, wife, mother and teacher passed away April 3, 2012. She was born May 31, 1928. She led a full and happy life; enjoying sewing, painting, reading, playing bridge and the fellowship of her many friends. She attended East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce where she met W.L. Corley. They married in 1947. Their first teaching job was in Kerens. From there they moved to Hunt County and later to Fannin County where she resumed her teaching career earning her Masters Degree from East Texas State University. Living in Trenton, she taught in Blue Ridge, Savoy and Bailey. She had the privilege of teaching at Grayson County College the first year it was established. She taught in Terrell when the family moved there and they moved to Dawson, she taught in Frost, worked as supervisor in country schools and at Bowie Elementary in Corsicana. After Mr. Corley's retirement they moved to Star Harbor on Cedar Creek Lake. She retired from Malakoff School system in 1984. After retirement she resumed her hobby of oil painting. She taught classes at her studio in Star Harbor and at the Art Gallery in Corsicana. She worked on Cunard Princess Cruise Ship on several voyages teaching pastel classes. Mr. Corley preceded in her in death in 2004. She was active in the Baptist Church in each community where she lived. She taught Sunday School classes including 20 years as teacher of a couples class at the First Baptist Church of Malakoff. She moved to Heritage Oaks Retirement Village in 2005. At the time of her death she was a member of Northside Baptist Church of Corsicana. She is survived by Michael Corley and wife Marcheita of Greenville, Robert Corley and wife Doris of Corsicana and Susan Corley Brown and husband Eddie of Sherman. Grandchildren include Jennifer Brown Lovett, Jason Brown, Geoff Corley, Elise Corley, Zack Corley, Melinda Corley Rothenbach and Cheryl Corley Phillips; great grandchildren, Shelby and Avery Lovett and Aydin and Austin Brown. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Building Fund at Northside Baptist Church or the church or charity of your choice. Visitation will be Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 6-7pm at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel. Service will be 10:00am Friday, April 5, 2012 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Rick Lamb officiating. Burial will be 2:30pm at Brigham Cemetery, Campbell, Texas. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jason Brown, John Brown, Geoffrey Corley, Zachary Corley and Richard Phillips.
