Jackie Carty

Jackie Wayne Carty was born on March 31, 1953, to John and Mary Carty in Dallas, Texas and drew his final breath on Sunday January 22, 2023. In between, our old man led a strong life. He grew up in the middle of six siblings. They were poor, but thanks to his mother’s mastery of the holy trinity; potatoes, beans and lard O’ mighty, they never went hungry. Dad didn’t mind living hard, but he didn’t want to be poor. There was a work ethic in him like none I have seen. He worked hard as a mechanic most of his life, his body complained, but he did love it and excelled at it. Work ruled much of his life, but Jackie was by no means a dull boy. He could cook well, and it came to him naturally. He competed and won many cooking competition awards, but it made him happiest to feed family and friends. If no one talked at dinner, he knew it was good. It was always good. But… If you were finicky, you didn’t ask what you were eating. Chances were good it didn’t come from the grocery store. His passion was always nature and he made certain that his sons and grandchildren held it in high regard as well. You love it, respect it, only take from it what you need, and by all means, get out there as much as possible to enjoy it. Our old man’s patience was thin, and he was tough, sometimes too tough he would later admit, but he made men of us. He pushed us and made us push ourselves. He taught us to think and that just about everything was common sense. As adults, we would learn that common sense, especially his vintage, was rare. He gave us the tools to thrive both in nature and in life. We could make it outdoors, fix our own cars, we could build a house and we could certainly survive a board meeting. For someone that never graduated high school, he gave us skills and the ability to acquire skills that many times proved more valuable than our formal education. Dad could be hard, but he was always there when you needed him. He wasn’t free with emotion, but If he fed you and gave you a hard time, he loved you. And… If he told you a chicken dips snuff, you better look under its wing for the box. His hope was always that we would do better than him. You did pretty good old man.
