Fred W. Jernigan

Fred Jernigan, age 73, of Angus, TX, went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday evening, February 12, 2026, at his home while surrounded by his family after a long battle of lung disease. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 17, 2026, from 11:00am - 12:00pm at Griffing-Roughton Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held following at 12:30pm at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery, officiated by Tony Neal and Jonathan Cobb. Fred was born July 18, 1952, the fifth child of six in Geneva, IL. His family moved from Pontiac, IL to Corsicana, TX in 1967. He was a 1970 graduate of Corsicana High School. He served in the United States Air Force from July 23, 1971-June 27, 1977. He was a Veteran of the Peacetime and Vietnam Era. He served as a Security/K9 Officer and was stationed at the Laredo Air Force Base, Laredo, TX, Clark Air Force Base, Philippines and Carswell Air Force Base, Fort Worth, TX. Fred then went to work as a Kiln Burner with TXI in Streetman, TX where he retired after 40 years of service. Fred met Elaine Howard, his junior year of high school, one afternoon on a school bus. Charles Franklin was picking on her by pulling her hair. When she turned around to slap Charles, he ducked and she slapped Fred instead and have been together since then. On July 3, 1971, they were united in marriage at Augus Baptist Church. They went on to have two children, Lora and Kevin. He was a long-time member of Mildred Baptist Church. Fred enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, and riding his 1994 Harley-Davidson. He also loved drag racing and rebuilding cars. He loved being with his family and friends, especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren... along with his two Yorkies, Sam and Tank. Fred is preceded in death by his mother, Annabell "Ann" McHenry; father, Earl Jernigan; brothers, Chuck Jernigan, Bob Jernigan and Paul Jernigan; sister, Sharon Kuster; aunt, Rosetta Reynolds; and in-laws, Bill & Wynona (Herod) Howard. Survivors include his wife, Elaine, of 54 years. His children, Lora (Jernigan) Tyra and husband Don, and Kevin Jernigan; grandchildren, Kyndal (Tyra) Orr and husband JT, and Madison (Tyra) Perry and husband Shane; great-grandchildren, Kaylie Orr, Benton Perry and two on the way; sister, Judy (Jernigan) Rosas and husband Raymond; half-sisters, Kelli (Jernigan) Damiani and Jeanie Jernigan; sisters-in-law, Peggy (Howard) Hensley and husband Mark, Jan Jernigan and Georgia Jernigan; brothers-in-law, Ken Howard and wife Vonda and Steve Kuster; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mildred Baptist New Church Sign Fund.
