Billy Shelton

Billy Reed Shelton passed away peacefully on August 30, 2023, having been surrounded by family. He was born April 14, 1925 in Kerens, Texas. He was the younger of two sons born to Henry Lester Shelton and Lizzie May Reed Shelton. He graduated from Kerens High School in 1942 and served in Italy with the US Army in WWII. Upon his return to Texas, he enrolled in the first class at Navarro Junior College, where he was a member of the Barracks Bunch, helped select the school colors and mascot, and joined several of his high school classmates on the first Navarro Bulldog football team. He married Estelle Lee from Streetman and Corsicana on July 8, 1950 in Powell. They were married for 66 years at the time of her death in 2017. Bill and Estelle made their home and raised their family in Kerens. He was a flight instructor, rancher, postal carrier and Kerens Postmaster over the years. He worked hard and joyfully for his family and community. He is survived by his daughter, Vicki Shelton Sargent and Mike Land; his son, Lee Alan Shelton; two grandsons, Trey Sargent and his wife, Couri, and Hunter Reed Sargent and his fiancée Emma Huff; one granddaughter, Sarah Griesemer and her husband, Chris; and six great-grandchildren, Avery Rene’ and Owen Reed Griesemer, Addie Mae and Amelia Rose Sargent, and Dorwin IV and Ellie Reed Sargent. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and his brother, Jimmie Lester Shelton, Sr. Pallbearers are Trey Sargent, Hunter Sargent, Chris Griesemer, Jimmie Shelton, Jr., David Wilson, Jr., Carl Lee, Jr., Benny Cherry, and Ron Wilson. “And He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things shall pass away.” Revelations 21:4 Visitation will be 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Friday, September 1, 2023 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Celebration of life will be 10:00 am Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel with Jane Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Kerens Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Trey Sargent, Hunter Sargent, Chris Griesmer, Jimmie Shelton Jr., David Wilson Jr., Carl Lee Jr., Benny Cherry. Honorary pallbearer will be Ron Wilson.
