Asa Joseph "Joe" Thommarson

Asa Joseph “Joe” Thommarson, 90, of Corsicana, Texas went home to be with his Lord and Savior May 21, 2014. Born May 23, 1923 in Tahoka, Texas to George Elbert Thommarson and Alice Penelope Armoline Sanderson Thommarson. Joe had four sisters and two brothers. He and his family moved to Circle, Texas, a farming community west of Olton, Texas. Joe attended school in Olton. He married Mary Oleta Kennedy April 1, 1944 in Olton, Texas. Joe and Oleta’s first child, Melvin Ray, lived a few short days. They subsequently had three more children: David Royce, Nelda Jo and Mark Andrew. Joe and Oleta recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in Mineral Wells, Texas during his time state side. After serving his country, Joe became an automotive mechanic at the Buick dealership in Plainview, Texas later becoming the Parts and Service Manager at the new Ford dealership in Dimmitt, Texas. After owning his own shop, they moved their family to Neosho, Missouri. During their time in Missouri, Joe enjoyed raising cattle while working for another dealership before ending his automotive career running the school bus barn. He and Oleta lived in Plainview, Dimmitt, and Muleshoe, Texas; Neosho and Goodman, Missouri; with a final move to Corsicana, Texas in 1997. Joe loved the Lord with all his heart and served many years as a deacon and in Sunday School administration. A lifelong commitment was visiting the sick, home bound and serving in the church. Joe is survived by his wife, Oleta; son, David Royce (wife, Bonnie) of Durham, North Carolina; daughter, Nelda Jo Kirk of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; son, Mark Andrew (wife, Lori) of Corsicana; grandchildren, Matthew Joseph Thommarson; Sally Marie Posey (John); and Jonathan David Thommarson (Jessica) of Durham, North Carolina; great grandchildren Luke, Ethan, Grace and Jude Posey and Levi Thommarson; sister, Opal Rudd Nicewarner of Slaton, Texas and many nieces, nephews and their children. (in-laws: Pearl, T.C. & Norma, Leslie & Gloria) Joe is preceded in death by his son, Melvin Ray Thommarson; and grandson, Adam Christopher Thommarson; his parents; sister, Thelma Babb; sister, Alice Huckabee; brother, R.D. Thommarson; brother, Andrew Thommarson; sister, Martha Helen Inglis. (in-laws: C.L., Robert, Ruby, Colleen, Mozel, Bill, Raymond, Dub, James & Jean, Elizabeth & Bill, Dick) Visitation will be Sunday, May 25, 2014 from 6 PM – 8 PM, Griffin – Roughton Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Monday, May 26, 2014 at Griffin–Roughton Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, immediately following the funeral service. Memorials may be given to Northside Baptist Church Building Fund, 2800 N Beaton, Corsicana, Texas 75110.
